Howardena Pindell was born in 1943 in Philadelphia, PA. She earned a BFA from Boston University in 1965 and an MFA from Yale University in 1967. That same year, Pindell began working in the Department of Prints and Illustrated Books at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where she continually worked for the next twelve years. In 1971, Pindell had her first major exhibition at Spelman College. In 1972, she, along with nineteen fellow artists, co-founded A.I.R. Gallery, the first artist-led gallery for women in the US. She continued to exhibit extensively throughout her career and was awarded honorary doctorates from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and Parsons The New School for Design.
