Lovell’s work has been exhibited extensively and can be found in the collections of at such institutions as the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Brooklyn Museum, Seattle Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Yale University Art Galleries, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Modern Museum of Art in New York, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has been awarded the MacArthur Fellowship, the Nancy Graves Grant for Visual Artists, the Richard C. Diebenkorn Fellowship, the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award Grant.
