Albert Huie Jamaican, 1920-2010

Albert Huie was born in Falmouth, Jamaica, in 1920. At 16, he moved to Kingston, Jamaica, where he later became a member of the 'Institute Group' at the Institute of Jamaica. In 1947, Huie was awarded a British Council scholarship and subsequently studied at the Camberwell School of Art in London. In 1962, he received the Jamaica Government Award for the best painting in the annual National Exhibition of Painting. Known for his folklore-inspired works, Huie focused on the landscape and people of his island in his art. Often referred to as the father of Jamaican painting, Huie passed away in 2010 at the age of 89.
