Cycle of Abundance, 1998
John Dowell was born in 1941 in Philadelphia, PA, where he began his artistic journey imitating the work of Lone Ranger comics with his brother. He studied art at Tyler School of Art (Temple University) in Philadelphia. After graduation, Dowell received a two-month residency and a senior printing fellowship with master printmaker Garo Antreasian at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, NM. Dowell then went on to complete an MFA at the University of Washington.
He has received many grants and awards for his artistic and teaching achievements including the 14th James Van Der Zee Award from the Brandywine Print Workshop in Philadelphia, Philadelphia for a Lifetime of Achievement in the Visual Arts and Teaching, and the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching from Temple University. Dowell’s work has been showcased in over 50 solo exhibitions, across more than 70 museums worldwide. Notable collections that he is represented in include the Yale University Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Studio Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
