devoted his life to preserving the stories, traditions, and environmental knowledge of the land.
Beyond cultural preservation, Ignacio’s environmental efforts have had a lasting impact. A
recipient of the Whitley Award, his work has contributed to the restoration and protection of
numerous species across Guyana, while also safeguarding Indigenous lands from exploitation.
His advocacy affirms that ecological survival and cultural continuity are deeply intertwined. In
Guyana, where rivers cut through dense rainforest and the earth sustains entire communities,
Ignacio’s legacy reminds us that history is not static, but living and passed from one steward to
the next. The color palette draws from the main colors in the Guyanese flag: green, gold
(yellow), and red, each carrying its own weight of meaning. Green reflects the richness of the
land and its forests; gold(yellow) speaks to mineral wealth and the promise of abundance; red
signifies vitality and the ongoing force of life. Together, these colors root the work in a visual
language of place, echoing the very land Ignacio has worked to protect. In honoring Ignacio, this
painting recognizes that to protect the land is to protect the stories it holds and to preserve those
stories is to secure the future of the people.
