"Atlas" is an artist's book that includes mixed-media photography and writing by Accra Shepp. This work "explores how we take the measure of the Earth using elements of the human body as the standard. Its scale reflects the large size of the traditional atlas."

Provenance

Purchased from the artist

All text by Accra Shepp, except for a quote in the introductory text on page

9 (the page with three columns of text).

The text in "Atlas" functions in a non-linear manner. The meaning arises incrementally with the images and text referring to each other not in a direct deductive line, but instead creating echoes as a passage or an image might refer to another a few pages along or back.

The introductory text on page 9 is three columns. The two outer columns appear to be nonsensical but are actually a skip-text. If the reader reads continuously from column one to column three, skipping over the middle column, the sense of the text is recovered. Its use here is to refer to how science is often understood (if at all) by most people. It is a confusing jumble of words and fragments that appear to indicate something just out of reach.

On pages 38 and 39 (facing) there are two small blocks of text sent into a larger passage. These small blocks are a fable that I wrote. It begins on the left side and continues on the right.
