American flag painted with , Description: "June Edmonds's new Flag Paintings create space for the inclusion of multiple identities including race, nationality, gender, and political leanings. Each flag is associated with the narrative of an African American, past or present, a current event, or an anecdote from American history. Edmonds investigates the complexities of these stories through the creation of new symbols for Americanness."June's Four Years in the White House Flag" was created with Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley in mind. Elizabeth Hobbs Keckle was a seamstress and assistant to President Lincoln's wife, the first lady, Mary Todd Lincoln. She wrote about her life and experience and the book was called, "Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House", a slave narrative and a Lincoln Family Portrait."
