Àṣẹ (axe / asé / ashé) is a Yoruba concept that exists across the African Diaspora. It has a dual meaning: both a spiritual directive, understood as "the power to make things happen," and a vital life force that flows through all living things. The 27 artworks in this gallery emerge from artistic lineages and experiences rooted in Caribbean countries, including Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Martinique, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, and Puerto Rico. Across varied perspectives and media, these artists give form to àṣẹ through invocations of divinity, resilience, and the ongoing cultural exchange that shapes Afro-Caribbean and American art.
